Students win national award for Mars research

By Ardis Herrold, faculty adviser

Jamie F. and Gabby F. were chosen as the 2014 national winners in the Mars Exploration Student Data Teams competition. They undertook an independent Mars research project entitled “Investigation of Early Noachian Environmental Conditions of Mawrth Vallis.” They first presented their research at the Science and Engineering Fair of Metropolitan Detroit, where they received a third place award and a special award from the Society of Women Geoscientists. This month, after presenting their work to scientists via a web seminar, they received first place in the Mars Exploration Student Data Teams national competition. They will now travel to Flagstaff, Arizona in June, to present their findings at the Planetary Mappers meeting.
