Interact students lead food collection

January 2014 - Interact (a service club) led the collection of  1,141 lunches, which were delivered to the homeless. Parents, staff and students came in with bags and boxes filled with lunches to donate to the hungry. Club officers scrambled to be able to count the lunches as they arrived. The generosity was overwhelming and we are so proud to be able to say "This is what we do here at Grosse Pointe North." (By Barb Skelly)

The first-ever Nspire Talks Conference was held at North. The event, a new concept on student voice, was designed after TED Talks and motivated by Kid President. The GPNpsire Talks Conference was a for-students by-students event. The evening featured a dozen high school speakers from around Metro Detroit, sharing an original message to inspire others.

Students Measure Water Quality

LAKE ST. CLAIR METRO PARK - On Oct. 9-10, AP Environmental Science Teacher Chris Skowronski took students to Lake St. Clair Metro Park to measure water quality. Students conducted physical observations of the Lake St. Clair and also measured the lake's biological oxygen demand, dissolved oxygen, fecal coliform levels, nitrate, phosphate, pH, and turbidity values. Results of the tests were sent to Michigan's Department of Environmental Quality. Citizen monitoring is essential, as all students in the Grosse Pointe Public School System enjoy and rely on the Great Lakes for fresh water everyday. By being watchdogs, we can ensure that Lake St. Clair's water quality says strong into the future.

Freshman Assist: Big Family Project

The Freshman Assist program was visited by Jeanne Fowler from Big Family of Michigan. She was abused as a child and later as a foster child. Her story is heartbreaking. She decided to help other foster children as her life’s work. We built “love bags” consisting of a toothbrush, shampoo, a stuffed animal, and other items. The bags are given to children the night they are taken from an abusive home. The bag provides a little bit of comfort in a terrible situation. We also collected all of the coloring books that were placed in the bags. The students were really affected by Jeanne’s story, and did a great job at the warehouse. Here is a picture of the group.

Pep Band Brings the Spirit

The North Pep Band provides school spirit by performing at the football and basketball games. The pep band is also showcased in front of the community at the homecoming parade and Santa Parade. Rehearsals start in August and are held on Monday evenings once the school year begins. There is no audition for this band, except for percussionists (auditions are in the spring). Members of this ensemble must be enrolled in band or orchestra class to participate.

GPN Scientists Brief Senator

WASHINGTON, DC - (June 2013) The GPN Mars Team visits Senator Levin at his office in Washington while there to present their research at the Planetary Mappers Meeting. They were national co-winners of the Mars Student Data Exploration Teams Project. (By Ardis Herold)
